Tai Chi

Wind down at the end of the day with our Tai Chi class. This is a relaxed session, focusing on balance and control, led by an experienced local teacher. Most Wednesdays at 5-6 p.m. at Wetheral Village Community Hall.

What is Tai Chi?

‘A Chinese martial art and form of stylized, meditative exercise, characterized by methodically slow circular and stretching movements and positions of bodily balance… This style of exercise works on flexibility and balance … excellent to work on these issues’ – physiotherapist Bhanu Ramaswamy, in her article ‘What Sort of Exercise Is Best for Me?’ (The Parkinson magazine, Autumn 2016).

Class members learn traditional “forms”, or moves. Each session includes explanation and demonstration to help beginners. The forms can be used to build up a routine to practise at home.

The exercises are usually done standing, so no exercise mat is needed. A few can be done sitting down. Most class members remove shoes. Wear flat shoes, if you wish to keep them on.

New members please contact the teacher, Lesley Relph: townandvillagetaichi@gmail.com, 01228 710898. Routine queries, contact Dave Little by email or phone (dwl2412@aol.com or 07710 413235). There is a charge of £3 per session towards the cost of the class.

If you have been advised to be careful with physical activity, consult your medical professional before starting any new form of exercise.
